Ray Prather and Dan Ebner presented What comes next? Emerging Issues for LGBT Clients for the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA).

This presentation by the ISBA Standing Committee on Women and the Law was co-sponsored by the ISBA Administrative Law Section and the ISBA Standing Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity offered participants 6.25 MCLE hours and addressed federal protections for LGBT clients that may soon change.

The full-day seminar explored emerging issues in family law, anti-discrimination, real estate, and estate planning and how attorneys can best advise LGBT clients. The presentation covered: The ongoing issues with same-sex civil unions; How prenuptial agreements are implemented in civil unions; Custody considerations when marriage or partnerships end; The importance of knowing the correct terminology when representing LGBT clients; How to protect a client’s civil union during estate planning; Loan and ownership considerations regarding real estate transactions; How the Colorado bakery case may change federal law and protections offered by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act; Education issues that can arise for LGBT students, etc.
